Conception Day

How The Uni Students Do: Conception Day.

No, this is not a blog encouraging teenage pregnancy! Let me explain to you all what this exciting day is all about. 19th of September: The Conception of Major-General Lachlan Macquarie. Conception Day is our university namesake's anniversary party turned massive music festival slash funfair fiesta slash piss up! Fun fact: It is actually the longest running music festival in Sydney (since 1969!) It is the most popular social event on the university calendar and is the one day a year we all get white girl wasted before midday. Be prepared for a very long day!

1. Pre-Conception Day:

Champagne breakfast, kegs at college, classy car pres.. however you like to do it – pre's for conception day is an important thing! The price of alcohol at the event is ridiculous plus they don't have much variety.
If you are budgeting your pre's experience.. and let's be honest, all uni students are poor: bulk buy - buy a keg! At $215 you get approximately 115 schooners. My boyfriend did this at his pre's and was one of twenty people sharing the keg – so for $11 he had 6ish beers. Pretty good.

If you don't feel up to hosting your own, The Village (one of the many college's at mq) organises a pre-drinking event open to the public for a charge of $25 – entry (closest location to the event), unlimited food and soft drinks are provided. BYO alcohol – strictly no glass.

Do it right. Pre's can be the most fun part of the day, getting silly with all your closest mates :)

2. Conception Day:

The best of 2014's lineup:
  • The Preatures
  • Art vs Science
  • Hermitude
  • Kingswood
  • Furnace And The Fundamentals
  • Destroy The Machines
  • Ember
  • NatNoiz
Personally I enjoyed Art vs Science the most! At the main stage on the lake-side lawn, the crowd went off for this act! Ladies, make sure you get onto someones shoulder's at some point..no festival experience should go without. NatNoiz went off at the Ubar rave cave for all those trance dancers present.

But who goes to Conception Day based on the musical acts anyway. It's a place to have fun chatting to and dancing with everyone and anyone, meeting new people under your alcohol disguise of shameless activity. Most noteable random meeting this year: saw this guy I used to go to primary school with. He was only in the year below me but I also used to babysit him...I managed to thoroughly embarrass him amongst all his friends by whipping this fun fact out within one minute of seeing him. And how he had sprouted! Whoops. That's what alcohol does to me!

3. Post Conception Day @ El Rancho:

Get there early for dinner otherwise you'll be waiting for your food for a verrrry long time and you'll be eating standing. If you want to be hectic and get on the heavy drinks again, you'll stand out from the crowd. Realistically, The Ranch looks like Zombieland at dinnertime. Don't worry, the best DJ's come later in the evening to pump you up again for some boogy-ing all night long.

Tips for 2015 from a seasoned Conception Day-er:
  • Do your makeup before you start drinking
  • Bring sunscreen, something warm for later in evening and comfy shoes!!
  • Organise a meeting point and time with your mates because reception is shit.
  • Have pre's with the people you want to hang out with at the event because it is super hard to meet up with people!
  • Make sure your phone's battery is 100% - both years my phone died by 4pm (there is free charging-stations in the uni hub and at the Ranch for those desperate)
Top Tip: DONT STOP DRINKING or you will be sorry and crash out by 3pm. Slow and steady really does win the race!

That is all.

Hope I have educated you on how the uni students do “Conception Day”!

Over and Out,

The Uni Students.
