Joining a society for free food

Hey everyone,

My name is Tharinda and I am a fourth year engineering student. As an engineer (to be), I generally have about 20+ contact hours (yey...) at uni and I tend to live in the computer labs. I generally take every opportunity to get out of the labs especially if there is free food.

I usually join societies (or like their pages) at the beginning of O-week or Macfest to get updates about free BBQs and events via email and facebook. It’s also good if you have friends who are freeloaders, they can tell you about events which you haven’t come across and you can be free loaders together.

One of the best societies to join if you would like free food is the wang club (https://www.facebook.com/wangclub ). They hold a BBQ once every two weeks and membership is only $10. So technically it’s not free.  If you don’t have $10, find someone who has a membership sticker and ask them to get you food instead.

And if you are really bothered, you can look through the MQ website for events (http://www.mq.edu.au/about/events) … you never know what you might stumble onto.

More on that next time.

Till then,
Tharinda

Post Uni Games Depression

What up peeps,

This here, what you’re reading. This is my first ever blog. So bear with me.

You’re probably now asking yourself, ‘why listen to this loser about uni life?’
Well, I’ll tell you why. I’m no Uni lifestyle virgin, I’ve been living this glorious lifestyle for just shy of three years. I’ve experienced everything from Uni Games to holding an elite athlete scholarship to even being a member of a Philosophy Society… don’t ask. These experiences are why I’m here and I want to pass on my experiences as I, once long ago, wanted inside info into what I was getting myself into socially when enrolling at uni.

As Uni games is currently running in Sydney this week I think it is imperative I highlight a major issue at competiors will experience next week. When Uni Games raps up each and every competitor will experience an episode of depression. Commonly referred to as Post-Uni Games Depression or PUGD for short (it’s a thing, don’t question it). It affects anybody and everybody who attended Uni-Games and effects can last up to 3 weeks.

Make no mistake about it people, we all know every Uni sending ‘athletes’ is either delusion or incredibly fucking stupid if they think it is about actually to competition. It is all about partying and sadly, this is the cause of PUGD. It is generally brought on by reminiscing on anything from court, free entry to clubs with your own exclusive entry line to the abundance of casual sex available virtually on demand.

So far the only noted treatment is to look forward to Uni-Games next year. Yes that’s why that guy who either graduated his Arts degree four years of who dropped out is back managing your team.

I have first hand experience with PUGD and the most powerful advice I can give is just to let you know there is light at the end of the tunnel and you will over come the vortex that is PUGD.

I hope I have explained, prepared or warned you about how the uni student do Post Uni-Games Depression.

Stay safe.

To the Fellow Readers, Hey!

Finding uni-life tense and boring? Escape from the bores of student-life and take a peek into what it’s really all about.

Please be advised, you may or may not experience more or equal satisfaction to uni-life after reading this.

What you’ll find in the next few weeks are the tips and tricks we wish we knew in our first year of studies and how to make your average study life a little more rewarding.
The four admins, (Josh, Rachael, Tharinda and myself, Karen) will guide you through some of the activities, events and topics within university that you may or may not know about. We will give you some first-hand pointers of surviving uni and actually making fun out of it (Yes, beyond the books, all-nighters and tens-of-thousands of dollars in debt you now have against your name).

We all have a history, but down to the basics, we all go to Macquarie University in NSW, Australia. We are in different majors, degrees and have come together to create this blog, just for you *insert cheek-pinches*. As much as we hate assignments and reading journal article after journal article, there are some great things about coming to uni and taking a course (and no, it’s not about the piece of paper you get after the blood, sweat and tears trying to get it whilst having some dignity left in you).

From Uni-games, festivals and the best clubs, to budget-shopping and job-searching: To all the new local and international students, we will introduce you to how we, the Uni students, DO!

Follow our Twitter Account to get updates on our latest posts and give us some ideas on what YOU want to know more of!

Most kindly and sincerely,

The Uni Students.
